Tavistock, which is in West Devon, is a market town in England that is close to the Tavy river - from which it got its name. Tavistock has a population of about 12,000 people, and its area has been settled as early as 961 AD. You can still see part of the original building that was established in 961 AD - which is Tavistock Abbey, which is now a pile of ruins.
Tavistock enjoys a oceanic climate - which is a climate that is similar to the rest of the United Kingdom, so you need to be dressed appropriately. July and August are the warmest months, so if you plan on taking a vacation there with your friends or family, you need to plan accordingly.
Also while in Tavistock you might want to take advantage of the local attractions - which include the market town as well as the shopping centre that is available in the town. The market in Tavistock serves the town itself, tourists and surrounding villages and farming communities, so it offers almost everything you might want to buy.
Another point of interest is the shopping centre which caters mostly to the tourists visiting the town. It also offers an expanding dormitory area for commuters that use the public transportation to reach the town and work within it or in the surrounding areas.
The market itself is covered and in a building, so you don't need to worry about the weather - and the main rush is during Fridays, when a lot of locals and visitors get ready to cook for the weekend, since they are about to take their weekly vacation. So if you want to avoid the rush and the hustle and bustle, you better plan accordingly.
Tavistock also offers various events for the people visiting it, which include the annual Tavistock Goose Fair which is known locally as simply Goosey Fair. The fair has been going on ever since 1116, and it is taking place on the second Wednesday of every October month, and is held for several days throughout the town. The fair's main attraction back in those days was to purchase the Christmas goose, which people would fatten before killing it and cooking it during Christmas.
Nowadays the fair serves as a place for various people to buy a lot of different commodities, take their kids to rides and various games, and various other activities associated with fairs.
There is also an annual food festival that is held in Tavistock each year, as well as a 2 day carnival with balloons, when residents are on holiday. There is also an annual music festival you can take your kids to - the Tavistock Music and Arts Festival, which features live music from various bands, artists and genres.
If you are more interested in the culture and sporting events the town has to offer, you have several options. You can watch the local rugby team - the Tavistock F.C. play, and many other mini and junior rugby teams, which play in the Tavistock Rugby Football Club in town.
