The quality of food and menus at the Frenchgate reflect the passion and enthusiasm of the staff. Care is taken to source ingredients locally wherever possible and all our food is prepared to order. Start with a homemade soup, a delicate risotto or our own smoked salmon, then maybe a loin of Yorkshire lamb together with a confit of shoulder, a fillet of local beef cooked to perfection, fresh halibut or one of our delicious vegetarian options.

Our bar and wine lists match the quality and value of our food. Choose from our superb house recommendations to classic and unusual new world offerings. As well as a range of fine spirits and liqueurs befitting the independent and non corporate feel of The Frenchgate, you can also enjoy a range of both local bottle conditioned ales, and imported beers from around the world.

Following your relaxing dinner retire to one of our eight individual guestrooms, all en-suite with bath and powerful showers. You may find your room has a free standing Victorian bath, or an original fireplace with views down to the river or out over the private gardens. All rooms are individually furnished, comfortable and well equipped. A quiet, restful stay is assured.

Breakfast is a leisurely affair, again sourcing the freshest of local bacon, sausage, black pudding and eggs. Natural smoked salmon and haddock. Fresh juices, fruit, cheese, ham, breads and croissant. Plus a superb selection of handmade preserves made from handpicked local berries and fruits.

Enjoy our delicious coffees and teas anytime throughout the hotel or in the private walled gardens.

Richmond, the capital of Swaledale lies on the river Swale. Steep, narrow cobbled streets and an abundance of Georgian houses give the town its unique character. A town bursting with activity but retaining a typical Yorkshire charm.

Richmondshire Museum, charts the history of Richmond and the surrounding Dales, don’t miss the surgery set from James Heriott’s “All Creatures Great and Small” tv series.

The Georgian Theatre Royal, built in 1788, this award winning theatre is the most complete, working Georgian playhouse in Britain.

There are many walks around Richmond and beautiful Swaledale and Wensleydale. Fishing, golf, riding and swimming are readily available. For those who prefer relaxation and solitude there are the vast open spaces of moorland in the 600 sq miles of the Yorkshire Dales and as much again in the North Yorkshire Moors.

Richmond Castle, is the oldest stone built Norman castle in England. It has a new visitor centre and those willing to climb the 100ft keep are rewarded with breathtaking views.

Easby Abbey, tranquil ruins founded in 1152 by the Premonstratensian monks. Can be reached via a beautiful, circular riverside walk from the hotel.

Visit Millgate House and acclaimed Yorkshire gardens, overlooking the river, as featured in many international magazines.

Rooms available include the newly refurbished Georgian dining room with its original Adams fireplace, the “old coach house” lounge, with its high ceilings, stylish décor, original artwork and log fire or the superb “Mousey Thompson” suite on the 1st floor of the “old cottage” overlooking the cobbles of Frenchgate. Offering a complete contrast this oak beamed room dates from the mid 17th century, with its original oak furniture and fireplace carved by the famous “Mouseman of Kilburn”, Robert Thompson. Private car park to the rear of the hotel accessed via Lile Close. From Darlington and the East this is the first turning left after the traffic lights and war memorial. From Reeth and the West then take the first turning right after passing over the roundabout at the top of Dundas Street
