Fishing at the Grange
We have approaching 600 yards of fishing on the River Esk, Yorkshire's premier salmon river, approximately half of which is double bank, the rest being single bank.
This was previously a neglected fishery. Since we came here eight years ago bank clearance work and installation and renovation of stone groins has been undertaken. The river holds sea trout in large numbers, many in double figures and an increasing return of Esk salmon.
Fly and lure are the only permitted fishing methods - most fish being taken on lures with the opportunities to fly fish increasing but, as yet, limited. The Esk is generally a late river with numbers of fish taken increasing from mid-May onwards.
Fishing permits Available to house guests only - a maximum of two being issued each day - £15 each. We do not offer an inclusive fishing and accommodation package since the Esk is a true spate river and the opportunity to fish when the river is 'right' is limited..
Other fishing locally Further fishing on the Esk is available within ten minutes drive at Egton Estates. Day tickets can be booked from the Estate Office. Early booking is advisable.
Still water trout fisheries are accessible within half an hour - e.g. Lockwood Beck.
Sea fishing trips out of Whitby and Staithes - both about 20 minutes away.
Salmon Action Plan The River Esk is currently in the tenth year of a salmon action plan. This involves a restocking programme and beck clearance work to redress the current imbalance in salmon and sea trout numbers. Legally caught fish may be kept, however, we do request that you consider returning any salmon caught in the interests of improving the fishing for future generations.
We hope you will enjoy the opportunity to fish 'The Lady Esk' |

How to find us
FROM THE NORTH From Middlesbrough take the A66 eastwards, then the A171 towards Whitby, passing Guisborough, going up Birk Brow, a very twisty hill, and out onto the moors past Lockwood Beck and Scaling Dam.
IGNORE ALL SIGNS FOR GLAISDALE! After two sets of rumble strips there is a complicated junction - hard right for Lealholm and Glaisdale, fork right for Egton and Grosmont. Take the fork towards Egton. Soon there is a crossroads - with a sign for Egton Banks. Turn right.
Follow the road down and down - through the farmyard of Egton Banks Farm - until the road goes level(ish) for a while. When you see a left hand bend sign, the river is ahead of you. There is a sharp right turn into the bottom of our drive. From the cross roads to our drive is 1.9 miles. Go up the drive and past the house to find ample parking and our main entrance.
FROM THE SOUTH From the A1(M) take the A64 past York, on to Malton. From the Malton bypass take the A169 to Pickering and Whitby. After Pickering follow the A169 onto the moors passing the Hole of Horcum and Fylingdales. Pass two left turns for Goathland. Soon after the second, take a left turn signposted Grosmont and Egton. Follow the road on down into Grosmont, crossing the North York Moors Railway at the level crossing and on up the hill to Egton. At the T-junction in Egton, turn right, pass the Wheatsheaf on the right, turn left - signposted to Glaisdale. Carry on for about 2 miles to the top of Limber Hill which is very steep .
At the bottom the road swings left, but take a very sharp right turn. When the road forks - go left which is our drive. Go up the drive and past the house to find ample parking and our main entrance.
FROM WHITBY Take the A171 towards Guisborough and Middlesbrough - usually signposted 'Teesside'. At each roundabout go straight on. Climb up and up away from Whitby and when the road levels out and begins to descend. take the left turn signposted to Egton and Grosmont. It has a brown tourist sign for the North York Moors Railway. As you come into Egton you will see the Wheatsheaf pub on the left. Turn right sign posted "Glaisdale" and follow instructions as for 'From the South' above... |
