| THE WHITE SWAN SPREADS ITS WINGS Middleham jewel is now sparkling  The White Swan, one of Middleham's most popular and attractive inns, has recently been extended and refurbished. The purchase of the town's old Post Office has enabled owners Paul and Helen Klein to create a 60 cover brasserie and five new bedrooms, making 17 in all. Overlooking the town's picturesque market square and boasting lovely rural views, the White Swan is now a premier town house hotel with superb facilities. This comprehensive and sympathetic restoration means that a Middleham jewel is now sparkling again. |
| A RACING CERTAINTY Hand-pulled ale in a friendly atmosphere The town of Middleham is justly famous for it horse racing pedigree and the White Swan is steeped in the history of the turf. The atmospheric public bar, with its cosy ambience full of character, intimacy and charm, is an ideal rural retreat. The old-fashioned flag stoned floor and welcoming fire provide the perfect setting for a relaxing and friendly drink.  There is a tantalizing range of hand pulled ales on offer, including Black Sheep, Theakstons Best and John Smiths on cask, together with a fine selection of quality wines from leading northern vintners Playford Ros of Thirsk. |
| COSMOPOLITAN CUISINE Food for all seasons in a modern setting The smart contemporary 60 cover brasserie complements the traditional public bar perfectly. It serves the very best modern, cosmopolitan cuisine, from mouth watering pizzas and pasta dishes to seasonal game, fish of the day and wicked puddings in an equally modern setting.  Hallmark dishes, which are established favourites, include Confit of crispy duck, slow-roasted leg of Yorkshire lamb, breast of chicken stuffed with mozzarella and sun dried tomato served with pesto risotto and Thai fish cakes. All the food is freshly prepared, using a wide variety of mainly Yorkshire ingredients from Whitby to Swaledale.  All meals at the hotel, including breakfast are served in the brasserie. Sandwiches are also available at lunchtime. |

| A GATEWAY TO HEAVEN Activities to suit all tastes The White Swan lies in the heart of Middleham, the racing town which is now known as the "Newmarket of the North". This is also Wensleydale country, one of Yorkshires most beautiful and peaceful dates. The area is steeped in history. The castles of Middleham, Richmond and Castle Bolton, all eloquent reminders of Yorkshire's proud past, are within easy reach, as are Jervaulx and Fountains abbeys. Meanwhile the elegant spa towns of Ripon and Harrogate are only 30 and 45 minutes away respectively by car. Both towns have a splendid array of quality shops. Middleham is home to some of the country's leading trainers and the racecourses of Catterick, Ripon, Wetherby, Thirsk and York are all within one hour's drive. Other local activities include fishing on the River Ure, shooting, tennis, golf at Masham, pony-trekking and clay-pigeon shooting. And, for something completely different, the Forbidden Corner at Coverham provides a tantalizing journey into the unexpected and unknown.
