Other accommodation near Thurso

Thurso is easily among the most unique towns in the entire United Kingdom. Many towns claim to have an identity that is all their own but Thurso definitely puts these other competitors to the test. Rare is a town that offers as many thrills in so many different niches as Thurso. Gorgeous natural landscapes are of course found all throughout the town thanks to its location in the extreme north of the United Kingdom's mainland. This is the area where gorgeous Scottish Lochs meet rolling hills and sweeping mountains for a veritable treasure trove of eye candy. Thurso is also home to some of the best fishing in the entire country. Thurso's greatest claim to fame, though, would be the town's unerring dedication to sports and as such the town is known throughout the continent as one of the best places to live for sports fans and athletes alike.

The Pentland Firth creates a massive amount of swell in the waters around Thurso and, not surprisingly, one of the greatest passions of many a Thurso resident is surfing. The waves generated by the Firth have been compared to the massive, towering waves of Hawaii and most people agree that there is no other spot in the surrounding area that even comes close to the kind of surf that Thurso provides. The European Surfing Championship regularly holds events in Thurso and the Scottish Surf Kayaking Championship is also well known for its adherence to the Thurso surf. Unfortunately, the waters of Thurso are incredibly cold and the town has the dubious honor of being the coldest place to surf within the O'Neill Highland Open. This massive competition is held around the world and it only lists six "Meccas" for fantastic surf. Places like Oahu and Santa Cruz naturally make the list but it is to Thurso's credit that it is placed among these giants and fits in just as nicely.

One of the most popular ports in Thurso is the Scrabster Port and this little nook has been a great boon to the local fishers. It is said that Thurso has the 2nd biggest whitefish harbor in the entire country. Not surprisingly, there are countless fresh fish shops to be found in and around Thurso and the cold water helps to keep in a fantastic flavor in nearly every fish sold in the markets. Fishing in itself is a sport but it doesn't reach the level of mania that surfing inspires within the town. One thing that nearly every resident loves, however, is swimming. The town has the biggest swim team in the entire Highlands area and nearly every major swimming event in Scotland is held in Thurso. Thurso is the kind of town that inspires perfection in each and every citizen. Perhaps it is because the natural landscape is so beautiful that every individual wants to make his or her body as gorgeous as the horizon and thus gets into shape. Perhaps the water is so cold that it effectively numbs the muscles and allows athletes to perform without knowing their level of fatigue. Whatever the reason, we can be sure that Thurso is a town that is proud of its heritage and has every right to claim such pride.
