The lovely and idyllic town of Torpoint is perfectly evocative of the particular nuance and personality that makes Cornwall such a beloved county in the United Kingdom and abroad. It sits comfortably amid the Rame Peninsula and thus has been known for its ferry system for quite some time. Even as far back as the 1700s Torpoint was indelibly linked to the water as an important and strategic naval base as well as a ferry point. In those days it was an indispensable connection between Cornwall and England and it wasn't until the 1800s that it became a town in the strictest sense of the word. This is clearly a marked departure from the typical English city. Even relatively young British towns were still towns during the eleventh century and many date back to the first century A.D. Torpoint, then, can be seen as a baby compared to most of its neighbours but this makes it all the more remarkable that the town has accomplished so much in its young life and is today a well-known and beloved city. |
