Other accommodation near Torpoint

The lovely and idyllic town of Torpoint is perfectly evocative of the particular nuance and personality that makes Cornwall such a beloved county in the United Kingdom and abroad. It sits comfortably amid the Rame Peninsula and thus has been known for its ferry system for quite some time. Even as far back as the 1700s Torpoint was indelibly linked to the water as an important and strategic naval base as well as a ferry point. In those days it was an indispensable connection between Cornwall and England and it wasn't until the 1800s that it became a town in the strictest sense of the word. This is clearly a marked departure from the typical English city. Even relatively young British towns were still towns during the eleventh century and many date back to the first century A.D. Torpoint, then, can be seen as a baby compared to most of its neighbours but this makes it all the more remarkable that the town has accomplished so much in its young life and is today a well-known and beloved city.

As mentioned above, Torpoint is a ferry town through and through. There are still three ferries employed in the town today and this allows people to get to Plymouth in under ten minutes. By all accounts, Torpoint can be seen as one of the most revolutionary towns in this respect because it was here that the brilliant James Meadows Rendel developed the first Torpoint Chain Ferry. To this day the basic setup of the original chain ferry is evident on nearly every ferry system that uses chains and they all have Torpoint and Rendel to thank for the technology.

Hearkening back to its naval roots, Torpoint is filled to the brim with nautical relics and sights. The HMS Raleigh is the main training facility for the Royal Navy and it is located very close to Torpoint. The Yonderberry naval fuel depot is also very near the town and it has been around for over eighty years. It isn't just naval ships that garner attention in Torpoint, though; yachting is also big business. Every year during yacht season Torpoint is the site of many upscale and popular races. This area is known as the Torpoint Yacht Harbour and it is a great place for visitors and tourists to see some of the most stunning and beautiful yachts in all of Cornwall. There are of course plenty of sights and diversions inland as well. Mount Edgecumb House, for instance, often rivals the many nautical attractions in popularity due to its lovely appearance and breathtaking photo opportunities. Anthony Gardens is also very close to Torpoint and it is widely considered to be among the most gorgeous places in all of Cornwall and even the entire United Kingdom. Put simply, you can be assured that you'll fall in love with Torpoint even if you don't fancy yourself a yachting fan. Torpoint is just that kind of city: No matter who you are you will find something to love within this charming little burg.
