In the gorgeous Devon countryside is the market town of Totnes, a special and unique area with a fascinating history and stunning location on one of Britain's most significant waterways, the River Dart. Like going back in time, Totnes retains a strong hold on its heritage and the main street alone is reported to have more listed buildings per head of population than any other town in Britain.
Totnes has a broad range of traditional attractions, including a weekly Elizabeth Market where you can sample the fantastic local produce on offer. The Town Mill, the information centre base, The Guildhall, The Totnes Image Bank and Photographic Archive and the Totnes Elizabethan Museum are just a few of the must-see attractions featuring amazing history and fascinating artefacts to have survived the ages.
Totnes also hosts its own Castle, a Norman motte and bailey with breathtaking views of the Dart Valley. The earliest surviving parts of the castle date from the 11th Century in the form of the Earth Works surrounding the site. The stonework to have survived is likely to have been built over previous timber fortifications, however the mystery and charm that surrounds the building is still predominant.
Environmental matters and sustainability are a main concern in Totnes and as a result the town is attracting both attention and visitors from all over the world. Transition Town Totnes and the aim to increase the town's economic resilience has led to the town adopting its own currency - the Totnes Pound - and it received national recognition in 2007 due to a famous storyline in the BBC Radio soap "The Archers", however they also accept sterling!
Totnes hosts a fabulous array of wonderful independent shops and eateries in which to buy unique gifts, fashions and locally produced items and food. Totnes is a little piece of history comes to life and the charm and buoyancy that allows such a place to exist in today's modern times really does create an air of magic and mystery and there is no possible way anyone would not be overcome with the atmosphere you feel when enjoying a vacation here. Totnes offers a vacation away from the present, not just your present life.
