Other accommodation near Uckfield

Though its name isn't one of the most pleasant in Britain, Uckfield is nonetheless one of the most lovable and enjoyable places to visit in the entire United Kingdom. The individual charm of this town is simply too great to be denied and there is a seemingly never ending list of things to do and see while visiting this quaint slice of heaven tucked away inside of the equally lovely county of East Sussex. Much of the natural beauty of Uckfield is derived no doubt from the famous River Ouse that runs aside the town but many of the man made features inside of Uckfield also go a long way toward creating the lovely attitude of the town.

Uckfield has been inhabited in some form or another ever since the Stone Age. Because of its proximity to the Ouse, Uckfield had been the home for tribes and nomads as far back as 9000 B.C or earlier. The Uckfield as we know it, though, didn't truly come into prominence until the first millennium and by then it was firmly shaping into the semblance of the town that it is today. By the 1200s Uckfield was a stopping point for sojourners and pilgrims who were taking trips across the country for religious reasons. Canterbury was reached by passing through Uckfield and so the town became one of the more important places to stop and rest for the pilgrimage. The same people undertaking these epic quests would soon be immortalized in print as the inspiration for The Canterbury tales, one of the oldest English tomes ever written. Uckfield was of course also a stopping point for people going to other locations and it grew in fame and prominence simply because of what a great place to stay for a couple days.

In 1291 the famed Medieval chapel was built in Uckfield. This would have been the anlage of the town we see today and not long after the church was erected Church Street was built around it. Visitors to Uckfield can marvel knowing that the road they are walking on has been trod by adventurers ever since the 1400s and possibly even further back. There are even hotels that still stand on this fabled street that were themselves the temporary sleeping quarters of these long dead wanderers. The Maiden's Head (now called the Red Lyon) can still be visited and it is positively thrilling to imagine all the other people who may have laid their head down in the same spot you yourself are now lying horizontally across. The King's Head is another great hostelry that is also incredibly old and fascinating. Church Street is of course home to many other exciting buildings from that era and this too helps to evoke in the mind a city lost in time whenever one thinks of Uckfield. If you are at all interested in the incredible history of England, Uckfield is the perfect destination and it is guaranteed to give you thrills beyond your wildest dreams.
