Located in the district of Cumbria England, Ulverston is a mainly known for being a cozy market town. The town was also once known for having the widest, deepest, and shortest canal in all of the United Kingdom. This canal, which used to be a big part of the towns economy, is no long in operation. Now the little town in the Lake District is known mostly for being a festival town.
The festival town is home to several festivals that take place during the year, the most well known of these festivals is the Lantern Procession. This festival involves local residents making lanterns out of tissue paper and willow then parading them through the town. This effect makes it look like a river of light winding through the streets of the town. At the end of the festival there is a wonderful display of fireworks.
Ulverston is also known to house the beginning point of the Cumbria Way. This seventy mile walk through what is considered the best National Park in all of England gets it start here in Ulverston. The parking point is the Cumbria Way Marker sculpture in the gill in the center of town. The sculpture depicts a compass whose materials contain minerals from the entire seventy mile walk. Ulverston's contribution to this statue is limestone.
The canal which the town was well known for is now a popular tourist stop. Thanks to the changing tide, the canal was no longer tidal. Now it is a simple freshwater environment which has become a haven for many different species of wildlife. Visitors can come and visit the canal to see it's wildlife and learn its history.
Ulverston has a major civic center. During your say a visit to Coronation Hall might net you a glimpse at some different works of arts or even the annual visit from the English Touring Opera. If you attend during one of the many festivals you might find yourself in this center anyway. The Music Festival, Folklore Festival and the Comedy Festival are all held in this auditorium.
For those who are interested in comedy a must stop is the Laurel and Hardy Museum. Ulverston is the birthplace of Mr. Stan Laurel. In honor of this there is a museum dedicated to the comic duo. A stop here is an absolute must for all Laurel and Hardy fans.
Since Ulverston is mainly a market town shoppers can find many nice things there. In the midst of the more traditional shops there are a few higher end boutiques for those looking for something really special. The city is almost completely devoid of actual chain stores save for one or two. Shoppers can find something unique, traditional, and lovely in this quiet town.
Ulverston is almost like stepping back in time. People don't hurry about since there is no reason to. It's a nice little place to sit back, relax and enjoy the festivals.
