The town of Uppingham is definitely not what you would call a metropolis. After all, it has a population of somewhere around three and a half thousand people and for much of its life it has been a market town that has had little attention strewn on it from the public or the media. But despite its diminutive nature, or perhaps because of it, Uppingham is one of the most beautiful towns in not only the county of Rutland but in the entire United Kingdom. Uppingham is also very influential in quite a lot of ways and the Uppingham School, easily the most famous and popular feature in the town, has educated some of the finest young minds on the continent and still does so to this day.
Much of Uppingham's beauty has to do with the fact that the town is home to some stunningly impressive churches. The Church of St. Peter has attracted countless people from pilgrims to tourists throughout the years and the Church of St. Paul serves as the perfect compliment to Peter. Unfortunately, there is no word as to whether anybody has ever robbed the Church of St. Peter to pay outstanding debts that they owed to the Church of St. Paul. This is the kind of information that should be made public immediately. At any rate, both churches date all the way back to the 1300s and throughout that time they have seen massive amounts of history including the ministry of the famous religious hero Jeremy Taylor. The Uppingham Workhouse is another very popular bit of history and, though it dates back only to 1777, it is no less historically significant than the churches. Sadly, the Workhouse no longer functioned after 1929 and now it is used as a warehouse for the Uppingham School.
As mentioned above, Uppingham is best known for the fact that it is the home of Uppingham School. Uppingham School is among the most lauded independent schools in English public school history. It was founded all the way back in 1584 and the headmaster at the time, Edward Thring, is seen as something of a hero in the educational system. Many of his practices that were considered revolutionary at the time became adopted throughout the entire country and to this day there are traces of his style in some of the most basic educational programs and curricula. Some of the brightest minds on the face of the planet came from this incredibly prestigious school and its importance simply can't be stressed enough. Uppingham is worthy of nothing but the highest honor simply for the presence of this hallowed academy. When one adds all of the other significant historical contributions made by Uppingham throughout the years it becomes downright shameful that the town doesn't earn half the recognition and applause that it deserves. Perhaps this discourse may help to shed light on how truly lucky we are to have Uppingham in the county of Rutland. If not, perhaps it may convince someone to take a trip to this fascinating slice of land.
