Ulverston has existed ever since a Saxon decided to set up home here. In 1280 the growing town was granted by Edward I and a market has been held here ever since.

There are many delights in Ulverston and a tour of the town, especially on market days, bring rich rewards for the sightseer. Market days are held on Thursdays and Saturdays. The market square holds an impressive cross at its far end and although a war memorial, it acts as a good meeting place. Leading away from the square is Market Street and at its junction with Union Street is the bank clock with its ornate tower. Built in 1883 by George Webster.

On the 16 June, 1890 Arthur Stanley Jefferson (Stan Laurel) was born in a small house on Argyle Street in Ulverston. Working in music halls and circuses, Arthur toured the country with his father, in 1910 he went to America where sixteen years later, he teamed up with the vaudeville star, Oliver Hardy, after that time Stan Laurel never looked back.

Besides the well known Furness Abbey, which owned and controlled most of the land in Furness, there were once one or two priories in the area, one of these was Conishead Priory which dates back to the time of Henry II when it was established by Gamel of Pennington as a hospital for poor lepers. Since 1976 it has been the home of Manjushri Buddhist Centre.

There is an abundance of friendly pubs, cafes and restaurants all within easy walking distance of Virginia House
