Other accommodation near Watford

The town of Watford often gets the short end of the stick in terms of recognition thanks largely to the fact that it is near many larger cities such as London. Though Watford's population is a solid one hundred thousand or so, the town is still often considered to be little more than a suburb of its larger neighbors with no real identity of its own. These assumptions, however, couldn't be further from the truth and in actuality Watford is a town with a rich and storied history that should be a source of pride for every citizen in Watford.

The town of Watford was first spoken of only a few short years after the first millennium when it was featured in the Domesday Book. The Domesday Book was an enormous almanac of sorts that listed every town in England right around this time. Finally finished in 1086, this massive undertaking was crafted for King William I in order to figure out how to best tax the many towns that made up England during these formative years. During this time Watford wasn't mentioned by name but the area that Watford would become was referred to multiple times as a settlement of sorts. Within ten years of being in the Domesday Book Watford was granted a weekly market square which was essentially a birth certificate for any hamlet trying to become a city. During those days, however, no town could truly call itself a town unless it had a beautiful and ornately decorated church. Watford wouldn't get a church until the 1200s but by the time St. Mary's was built the town was well on its way to national recognition. St. Mary's can still be seen today and it boasts the classic beauty that most churches of those days had in spades. It was refurbished to great effect in 1871 and is now a must-see for every tourist visiting Watford.

Watford was also one of the towns that benefited greatly from the Industrial Revolution. The town's fortuitous location amid some of the largest cities in England helped it to enjoy some of the runoff from the vast wealth created by heavy industry and Watford saw its size and fortunes increase rather drastically during these years. The advent of both the Birmingham Railway and the London Railway also helped greatly in the growth of Watford and it was right around this time that rumors began to arise that Watford was little more than an offshoot of these larger and more glorious towns. This attitude is only seen in people who haven't visited Watford, though, because anybody who has ever set foot in the town knows that it is filled to the brim with beautiful diversions that make it every bit as unique and wondrous as its neighbors. The Watford Colosseum is one of the most lauded recording areas in the entire country and the Watford Palace Theatre is an internationally renowned performance hall. As you've noticed, both esteemed locations have Watford as their first name and they have helped the town to gain back some of its identity. Only time will tell if this is enough, though.
