Welwyn Garden City is sometimes just referred to as Welwyn Garden and, in cases where brevity is necessary, simply as Welwyn. No matter what you call it, though, Welwyn Garden City is a gorgeous slice of earth that easily bests any other location in Hertfordshire in terms of lovely scenery and is in the running for the most beautiful place in the United Kingdom. Welwyn Garden City is definitely one of the younger cities in England, though, and this has to be taken into consideration when evaluating it for its physical appearance. On the one hand, Welwyn Garden City was only founded in the 1920s and it was made with the intent of being a Garden City. This means that it hasn't had to face such things as plagues, wars, economic depressions, and other issues that many of England's older cities have had to deal with. On another note, though, one can argue that Welwyn didn't have thousands of years like most of England's cities with which to build gorgeous castles, amazing abbeys, and all the other fantastic things that make many beautiful cities so beautiful.
One thing is certain, though: Despite the fact that Welwyn Garden City isn't even one hundred years old, it is still a remarkable and fascinating specimen when it comes to studying history. Welwyn Garden acts like a living, breathing slice of history due to the fact that it perfectly sums up and exemplifies the attitudes, ideals, and outlooks that permeated Victorian England in the early 1900s. There are few examples that so effortlessly reveal exactly how the world was and what the world held dear at a given time in history. We can thank a man named Sir Ebenezer Howard for the fact that Welwyn Garden City exists in the first place. This forward-thinking genius essentially invented the idea of the Garden City and he in fact was the one who created England's first Garden City, Letchworth Garden City. Welwyn Garden City was his second Garden City and it can be argued that it is his finest. His aim was to create the perfect blend between the amenities of the city, like shops and roads, with the quiet, quaint demeanor and natural beauty of the country.
Welwyn Garden City succeeded wonderfully as a concept and, though a few changes have been made that changed the town from what the original architects and city planners envisioned, these changes have been as streamlined and natural as possible. A scant adding-on of shops was necessary and a few new houses had to be built but nearly all of Welwyn's original charm still exists and a visitor to the town today can easily see the snapshot in time that Welwyn Garden City represents. It may not be as old as some of England's most venerable locations but it is almost impossible to argue that it isn't one of the most beautiful locations in the entire United Kingdom.
