Local interests

It`s a fine spot. On a clear morning you can go outside and if you look one way there`s the Hambleton Hills and in the other direction you look right across to the Dales.” (from `A Brief History of the Cowtons`)

North Cowton is within easy reach of Northallerton and Darlington and the market towns of Bedale and Leyburn in Wensleydale, and Richmond, with its historic castle, Georgian Theatre Royal and riverside walks in Swaledale.

Less than an hour's drive away are the cities of York with its Minster and many museums. Ripon with its cathedral. Easby with its Abbey and the shopping and leisure facilities at Newcastle (The Metro Centre) and Teeside.

Richmond is said to be the 'gateway' to Swaledale, the most northerly Yorkshire Dale. The Swale is a fast flowing river in a valley which gets narrower the further west you go.

Wensleydale in the Ure valley is much wider and more densely populated. Many scenes from James Herriot's "All Creatures Great and Small" were filmed in these Dales

Other interests for the historian are the Roman roads, Medieval Castles, great religious houses and the remains of the lead mining era which dates from Roman times to the late 1900's.

Kiplin Hall - also on our doorstep - is a Jacobean country house built in 1620 by the founder of the State of Maryland, USA, Lord Baltimore.

For the golf enthusiast there are courses at Richmond, Catterick Garrison, Darlingtonn and Northallerton. For sailors and windsurfers there is Ellerton Park. (no motors.) For the motor sport fan there is Croft Circuit a short drive away.
