As a relatively small town, Wetherby is often lumped up into part of the City of Leeds rather than being referred to as a town in and of itself. This is a most unfortunate situation, however, because Wetherby is filled with a rich history that commands a singular presence in many instances. Settled along the River Wharfe, Wetherby was indispensable in years past as a crossing point for people going to and from London and Edinburgh. Many experts agree that Britain as we know it would not be the advanced nation that it is if it weren't for the early influence of Wetherby's early staging posts.
As hinted at above, Wetherby is filled with historical monuments that far outweigh some of the towns Wetherby is grouped with. Chief among these magnificent relics is the famed Wetherby Bridge. This spanning edifice has stood across the Wharfe for countless centuries and it is listed as a Grade II Scheduled Ancient Monuments. In other words, the bridge is very old and very important to the culture of England. Many of the similarly old hotels and inns that housed travelers going to and from London can still be seen in Wetherby and it is a thrilling occasion to rest in a room that has seen the traffic of generations too plentiful to count. The Toll Bar House is probably the most popular of these old locales but the scenic beauty of these edifices are all on par with one another.
Wetherby's historical roots reach much further back than the Toll Bar House, though, and some of the most interesting history in the town took place in the 1000s and 1100s. It was during this time that the town was the home of the Knights Templar. Much intrigue and mystery surrounded Wetherby at the time and it quickly grew in prominence even if most of the utterances about the town were whispered in hushed tones. Alas, the glory of those early days was irrevocably harmed a couple centuries later as the battles between Scotland and England took over the whole nation. In one of these spats Wetherby was nearly burned to the ground. Many citizens of the town were brutally murdered or burned to death and it is a dark spot in town's past that the citizens nevertheless are proud to speak of. The Wetherby of today is a sight that has to be seen to be believed and, lest you think that all there is in the town is old buildings, there is a thriving night club scene and many fantastic pubs and concert halls. Wetherby is a town poised in the present but steeped in the past and it is to the credit of the citizens of Wetherby that neither of these features detracts from one another but instead enhance the joy one feels from walking around this gorgeous burg. If you have yet to visit Wetherby it is recommended that you do so as soon as possible just in case another fire ravages this beautiful little town.
