Whitby in North Yorkshire is a coastal town and a tourist attraction close to Scarborough. Currently tourism and of course fishing are the most important source of income for the town of Whitby. The tourism is largely due to the town being part of the story in Bram Stoker's Dracula.
The East Cliff is dominated by the ruins of St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey. The Abbey is still an interesting building despite it, obviously, being ruined and you can enter it through the renovated Banqueting House. The Abbey can be reached by climbing the 199 steps locally known as the "Caedmon Trod". You will not be the only one that will hear numerous tourists counting the steps till they reach the top. St Mary's is still an important part of the landscape as it lays at the top of a hill and can't be missed from any direction. Because of the towns unique location it is still a shipping town within easy shipping distance to Scandinavian countries.
Whitby was voted "best seaside resort of the year" in 2006 by Which? Holiday magazine. If you move from the East Cliff to the West Cliff you will have the feeling you are in another town as the landmarks are completely different.
Here you will find a statue of Captain James Cook who did his apprenticeship in the town. Whitby Wizard is the new science museum located here. If you want to party in Whitby you are always welcome. With plenty going on all year long. The Regatta is the most famous rowing race in the area. It was initially set out to be a local competition, but that concept has been ditched years ago and now competitors from all over can be watched here. This has also resulted in a lot of side events including a display by the Red Arrows.
There is a dark presence during the "Gothic Week", which is held every two years. If you want mainstream music the "Whitby Now!" annual music festival will probably be more to your liking. It has been on the calendar for nearly 20 years now. If you want to take a present with you, you can never go wrong with Whitby Jet, which is found in the area around Whitby. It is basically fossilized wood of the Monkey Puzzle tree found in this area.
