With its original oak beams, inglenook fireplace and cobbled forecourt, a warm welcome awaits you at the White Lion Coaching Inn. Since the early 1800's in one way or another, the White Lion has been welcoming visitors.

Its location on the junction of the A487 and A489 is where the main North/South road meets the end of the East/West road. Situated by the Victorian clock, the hotel has a large car park to the rear.

Machynlleth is set in the beautiful picturesque Dyfi Valley from which a rich vein of Welsh history has evolved. Machynlleth contains many notable sites of significant historical interest which includes the Owain Glyndwr Parliament House on Maengwyn Street and the Royal House by the Garsiwn. Machynlleth is a market town and can be described as the true centre of Wales.

A royal charter was granted for a market to be held in Machynlleth in perpetuity by Edward 1st to Owain De La Pole, Lord of Powys. The imposing clocktower in the centre of town was originally a birthday gift from the people of the town to mark the coming of age of Charles Stewart Vane-Tempest, Viscount Castlereagh, the eldest son of the fifth Marquis of Londonderry, whose family lived at Plas Machynlleth for many years.

The hotel offers a range of rooms, (en suite or standard) for a range of pockets. All rooms are tastefully decorated with country co-ordinates, antique pine furniture, hospitality tray and remote controlled colour television.

Our restaurant offers a substantial traditional menu specializing in fresh local produce, with dyfi lamb and roast welsh topside of beef being the most popular dishes. Our restaurant is open from:

The Centre for Alternative Technology; this is europe's leading Eco-centre, with its water powered cliff railway, interactive displays, solar energy, wind power and adventure playground is a marvelous day out for all the family.

Walking: Cader Idris and Snowdon are nearby for the experienced walker and there are many other local country and town walks.

Golf: eight courses are available to the golfer within half an hours' drive.

Shooting: Brynmelyn offers excellent clay shoots and track riding.

Fishing: The Dyfi offers excellent salmon and sea trout fishing, while Clwedog and Plynlimon are superb for trout fishing.

Leisure Centre: This has facilities for badminton, squash, indoor bowls, a gym, sauna, swimming pool and climbing wall.

Railways: for narrow and standard guage enthusiasts, there are a dozen or more within an hour's drive.

Birdwatching: Ynyshir bird sanctuary is only 15 minutes away for the keen ornithologist.

Rallying: Machynlleth and the surrounding forestry play host to the Welsh rally and many more annually where the action is explosive.

We are basically two hours from Liverpool, Manchester, Hereford, Carnarfon and Swansea two and a half hours from Cardiff and Holyhead and four hours from London.

The local railway station which is five minutes from the hotel has direct service to Aberystwyth, Pwllheli, Shrewsbury, Birmingham and London. A taxi service from the train station to the hotel is available on request.
