Though the town of Winchcombe, located in the lovely county of Gloucestershire, has a population that hovers only around three thousand or so, it is important to remember one vital fact: Winchcombe is located within the Cotswolds. Anybody familiar with this stunningly beautiful region knows that the area is a hotbed of tourism because of the sheer magnificence of the area. The Cotswolds are called the "Heart of England" for good reason: It is hard to think of another location that so effortlessly captures the splendour and wonder of England's verdant landscape. These magnificent hills stretch over twenty miles wide and ninety miles long and are a favourite of hikers, walkers, photographers, poets, and nearly any other group that appreciates beauty in its most perfect form. It is little wonder, then, that the Cotswolds region is deemed an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" by the government.

Thus, it is in this heavenly region that we find the equally lovely town of Winchcombe. Nearly every corner of this town offers the amazing view that is a trademark of the Cotswolds and, according to the locals, the scenery never gets tiresome. Not all of the amazing sights are of the natural variety, though. Winchcombe is very old and it has been a settlement for various human beings for thousands of years. One of the most popular destinations in the town is in fact man made and it is known as the Belas Knap Neolithic long barrow. In the Neolithic Era, humans were still in the Stone Age and the idea of civilization or towns was completely out of the question. This would have been over ten thousand years ago and writing on the wall with rocks was about the only form of entertainment available. It was in this era, though, that long barrows began to be built around the world. These long barrows were essentially just stone monuments that were thought to be a form of worship for a long forgotten god. At any rate, the fact remains that anybody visiting Winchcombe is able to lay eyes on one of the oldest human creations in the world. The long barrow has thankfully been maintained and it truly is an incredible sight to behold. Winchcombe also knows that most of its visitors are there with the intent to explore the Cotswolds and so the town is filled with many different footpaths that allow walkers and hikers the best routes to the most stunning scenery, including the aforementioned long barrow. There are also plenty of comfortable and lush inns that allow tourists to rest their weary feet and legs after a long day of adventure out among the rolling hills. Rare is the town that can offer nothing more than abject beauty as its industry and succeed so admirably. Anybody who has yet to lay eyes on the Cotswolds would do well to book a trip to Winchcombe so that they can experience the Heart of England from the best possible starting point.
