 Yarn Market Hotel
Honeymoon Suite | As a family hotel, we are pleased to welcome children of all ages, and also well behaved pets (by prior arrangement). Our conference facilities, special interest breaks and packages have received many compliments from recent participants. Our location at the edge of Exmoor makes us ideally situated for walking parties and lovers of the countryside and wildlife in general, and we are happy to provide packed lunches and ironing/drying facilities if required.
The local area has much to offer. Dunster itself is a beautifully preserved village which has been described as the Jewel of Exmoor. Village attractions include the castle and gardens, a working water mill, packhorse bridge and the priory church. Both castle and mill are National Trust properties and are open to visitors from spring to autumn. |
The Yarn Market, built in 1609, is one of the main features of the High Street. This is where local cloths or Dunsters were sold, giving the village its name. Stone ground floor can still be purchased from the mill and enchanting carillon tunes ring out from the church bells. The priory church houses a unique rood screen, whilst the fragrant and serene church gardens lead into a pretty and peaceful walled garden, now owned by the villagers of Dunster.Other interesting local excursions might include the famous Gallox Bridge, crossing the River Avill, the Deer Park, Dovecote and the Iron Age fort at Bats Castle. The magnificent views from Gabbist Hill and the secluded Dunster Beach are only a short walk away. Steam trains on the West Somerset Railway stop at regular intervals in Dunster station, with connections to Minehead to the west and through the Quantock Hills to Bishops Lydeard, some 6 miles from Taunton, to the east.
Dunster is ideally situated for walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing, golf and touring by car. Wildlife safaris and guided walks by National Park staff are frequently organised. Assistance with routes for walking and touring is available if required, and there is a wide selection of books, maps and local information. There is also an Exmoor National Park Visitors centre in Dunster which provides useful information on the area, its history and activities.
Transport for walkers preferring to walk linear routes is available outside the main holiday season, and collection from Minehead for guests travelling by public transport can be arranged at a reasonable cost. During the summer months there is an excellent bus service linking Dunster to other villages on Exmoor.
