Bristol is a city in the south west of England. With a population of nearly half a million it is the eight largest in the United Kingdom. There are more than 30 other places in the world called Bristol and some are even in unexpected locations like Jamaica and Peru. The thought remains that they are all named after the Bristol in the South West of England. This is due to Bristol's prominence in UK history in the early part of the middle-ages. The reason Bristol was here was mainly because of the harbour and the easy connection to the rest of the world via water. The harbour used to be right in the middle of the city centre, but it has since been moved away from the centre. The Docks are still a tourist attraction even though Bristol currently is mainly known for the Aviation companies located here.

The stunning Bristol Cathedral is a must see building and even if you are not into politics you might want to have a look at the Council House, the seat of the local government. Cabot Circus is a newly opened shopping centre costing nearly half a billion pounds and due to this shopping centre Bristol is hoping it will regain its prominence in the UK and amongst visitors. It has recently been voted the most tempting place for young adults to visit. The Bristol Old Vic theatre might not be for every young person, but the "Banksy" artworks will make everyone smile. They include a person hanging lifeless from a window while two people look the other way from the window. If you are ready for a drink then you should have a look in the heart of the city where you will find Llandoger Trow, one of the oldest public houses. Bristol is host to two football teams called Bristol City and Bristol Rovers. Rovers is the oldest team, but City play at the higher level in the championship. Rovers is close behind with a place in League One. None of the teams has ever been champions of England.
