Canterbury in Kent is one of the most south easterly places in England. As it is on the way to and from Dover it is easily reachable by car/ferry/train. The trains from London to and from Dover stop at Canterbury East and take about 90 min to reach London. There should be a high speed train operating on this line when you read this article which would cut the travel time almost in half. Canterbury West is the second station and from here one can get trains to and from Ramsgate and Margate.
By car the A2 leads past Canterbury and also leads from London to Dover. London city centre is less than 100km away. By bus (to London Victoria) this takes about 2 hrs.
The most visited attraction in Canterbury is without a doubt the Canterbury Cathedral. This is the Mother church of the Anglican Communion and home to the Archbishop of Canterbury. It was founded more than 1400 years ago and attracts over 1 million visitors each and every year. Because of the ancient reputation of Canterbury there are plenty of old architectural sights to be seen here including the Norman Canterbury Castle and St Augustine's Abbey. St Margaret's Church is open to the "Canterbury Tales" which includes life size character models re enacting the tales by Geoffrey Chaucer.
The Marlowe Theatre is named after Christopher Marlowe, who was born in the city. It is currently not open as it has been demolished to be re build again and hopefully it will be open again in the middle of 2011.
Casey's Bar is host to the oldest remaining Tudor Theatre in Canterbury. Despite the fact that there are many students and "younger" adults located in the city the sports achievements in Canterbury are below par. The local football team plays at a lowly level and there is no rugby to speak of with the locals playing at national division 3 level. Canterbury has, however, been host to not one, but two stages of the tour de France. In 1994 the tour past here and in 2007 it was the finish for stage 1.
