Cheltenham in Gloucestershire is in the so called "Heart of England". It is easily reached by train being on the Bristol-Birmingham main line. Places it connects too include Gloucester, Bristol, Swindon, London Paddington, Cardiff Central, Plymouth and the South West, Birmingham, Derby, the North West, the North East, and Scotland.

Cheltenham is probably most famed for the horse racing event that is held every year in March. This is called the Cheltenham festival and is noted for being the most important meeting of the calendar. The Gold Cup and Champion hurdle are only two of the notable races. The festival coincides most years with St Patrick's Day and the thousands and thousands of Irishmen that visit the festival will show you how to party into the wee hours of the next day. There are several other festivals in Cheltenham during the year including a Jazz, literature and Film festival. Some impressive venues that play host to these events include the Town Hall, the Everyman Theatre, The Playhouse Theatre and the Pittville Pump Room.

Of course there is more in Cheltenham then just the festivals and that is largely in part because of its unique location.

It lies just outside of the Cotswolds which is a large area running for several thousands of square kilometres consisting of rolling hills and gorgeous landscapes. The area around Cheltenham is perfect for hiking or cycling and you will more than likely run in to some horses being trained in the distance or even up close.

Back in Cheltenham itself you will immediately notice the Regency style of building. One of the most impressive buildings is the Cheltenham synagogue. The Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum has some very decorative art in its collection. The Holst birthplace museum is dedicated to the composer and has his piano on show as well as other personal items. It is also host to a working Victorian kitchen and laundry, Regency drawing room and an Edwardian nursery.

The Cheltenham Civic Society has been putting up Plaques all over the city to celebrate well-known citizens (blue plaques) and locations well worth visiting (green plaques).

For shopping one can go to Cavendish House, the Regent Arcade shopping centre or the Beechwood Shopping Centre. There is also a 2 Michelin Star restaurant named the "le Champignon Sauvage"
