The Scottish Borders is one of the most interesting and eclectic locales in all of the United Kingdom. This gorgeous, hilly area is enlivened by the famed River Tweed and, thanks to the beautiful natural features, every town one comes across in this lush, sweeping landscape is endowed with the visceral wonder that permeates every nook and cranny of this ancient land. Scattered amid this area is the perfect example of such beauty: The town of Hawick. Despite being one of the cities in Scotland that is furthest from the lovely sea, Hawick is filled to the brim with its own lovely features and a visit to the town will prove outright that the sea isn't all there is to see in Scotland.

One thing that is sure, though, is the fact that Hawick is nothing if not distinctive and unique. Many of the buildings in Hawick are made of sandstone and have slate roofs. This is due to the fact that the two materials were once found in spades around the area and they go very far in making Hawick look like no other city around it. This flash of individuality has definitely been bestowed on the residents of the beloved town and all around you can find examples of the local flavor. Hawick is very popular indeed for its longstanding annual event known as the "Common Riding". This fest is meant to be a commemoration of a battle that was fought between some young residents of Hawick from years past and a raiding band of marauders from England. The youths won and the Riding helps to keep the event in our memories as modern-day riders ride around the city limits to a throng of excited residents and tourists alike. Though there is an air of reverence surrounding the Common Riding, make no mistake about the fun involved: Most tourism guides in the United Kingdom point out that the Riding is one of the rowdiest and most exciting parties on the face of the Earth. It is little wonder, then, that countless people flock to Hawick during this time of year not to remember the battle in the past but to enjoy the revelry in the present.

Another old tradition that was long a part of Hawick was the famed "Baw Game". This event is perhaps the best indication of the age of the town. Essentially, the Hawick Baw Game would transpire every year as a competition between "doonies" and "uppies" during the first Monday after February's new moon. The entire town would come out to see the game and the town itself would be an important part of the field, with the river being of particular importance. Sadly, Hawick put an end to this longstanding tradition but the game still lives on, albeit played in the town of Jedburgh. This discrepancy aside, no one can fault Hawick for being a town that doesn't play to the beat of its own drum. If only every city in the United Kingdom could claim such a unique attitude and outlook.
