Lewis, which is called Leodhas in the Scottish version of the Gaelic language, is also called locally and internationally as the Isle of Lewis. The Isle of Lewis is located in the northern part of Lewis and Harris, which is considered to be the largest island in the Western Isles. The Isle of Lewis is only 683 square miles, which is 1,770 square kilometres, and has a population of about 20,000 people, which means it has a population density of about 27 people per square mile, or about 10 people per square kilometre.
The Isle of Lewis enjoys exposure to the Atlantic ocean and to the Gulf stream, which means that the island has mostly a cool and moist climate, so you should prepare your vacation accordingly. Both the summer and the winter have many clouds in the sky during them, and a significant rainfall with high winds, so you need to dress accordingly and choose the day of your visit according to the activities you want to indulge in.
If you are interested in having a vacation where you visit the island and hike throughout it, you will have a good vacation, since you will have a lot to do. One of the things you can do is go to one of the 15 sites that serve special scientific interest in biology. They are scattered throughout the island, and they allow you to observe the wildlife in the area - from the ones in the sky, to the ones in the waters.
There are several conservation areas in the Isle of Lewis which you can visit, and you can also take your friends and family on bird watching activities in the coastal region, where a lot of seabirds reside. You and your family will be able to view birds like the gannets, the kittiwakes and many more. Some more familiar than others - like the seagulls, which seem to adorn the sea.
If you prefer to see other types of birds you can visit the higher parts of the island, like the Uig hills, from which you can see the golden eagles. Also some people have reported sightings of the white-tailed eagles in the area, but nothing was confirmed, but you never know.
It is advised that you pack a lunch, get the entire family a set of binoculars, dress appropriately - bring a hat even thought it is usually cloudy, so you will be protected from the sun, and enjoy your day in the outdoors.
If you prefer to enjoy your vacation by watching sporting events, you have a lot to choose from. You can see various teams playing football, rugby, gold and many other types of sports.
Football is a very popular sport in the area, especially when counting the amateurs playing it. You can see football matches - professional or amateur in Goathill Park, which is located in Stornoway.
You can also see a smaller number of teams that play the Scottish game of Shinty, which is thought to be the father of hockey itself - it has similar rules, but is somewhat different, and you play it on a grass field.
