Keswick Hotels and Guest Houses

Keswick in Cumbria is located on the shores of Dervent Water and a short distance from Lake Bassentwaithe. This is the only lake in the area despite the well known Windermere laying close by. The latter, however, is not officially called "lake" Windermere. Keswick used to be called Cese-Wic in the olden days making it highly probable it was a Cheese Market town in its early existence. Despite the fact there are less than 5000 permanent residents it is a vibrant and lively town especially in the summer months. During the rest of the year the market on Market Square on Saturday is one of the only attractions. This does give one a great chance to visit Moot Hall which is located directly off the square. Moot Hall is now home to the tourist board of Keswick where you can get all the information of where to go and what to do. They will also be able to give you detailed information of the different activities and the festivals going on.

The Keswick Museum and Art Gallery is home to the famous Musical stones of Skiddaw. Another nice point of interest is the Cars of the Stars museum where you can watch cars that have played a huge part in either TV series or films.

During the summer Keswick is transformed into a vibrant and exciting little town. Not only will you be able to enjoy the Dervent Water, but you will also be able to sample 200 different beers and ales during the Beer festival or enjoy some light entertainment during the annual Jazz festival. There is also an annual film festival attracting close to 5000 paying guests. Most people will indirectly have heard of one famous Keswick born person. Ian Taylor is the founder of the famous Kingsmill bakery which serves all of the UK.

A little known fact and surprising for a small town like Keswick? Keswick is the first location in Britain where the police used to wear riot gear. When the gear was tested by greater Manchester Police they had to go out to Keswick where some trouble had occurred and a police car had turned over. The police showed up in full riot gear giving Keswick a (dubious) place in the history books.
