Other accommodation near Peebles

The town of Peebles is easily among the most exciting historical locations in all of Scotland and this is truly saying something considering Scotland is home to some of the most stunning history that our species has ever witnessed. Though its population is only around nine thousand, Peebles is nonetheless an indispensable part of the country and has been ever since its inception.

For much of its life Peebles was a town that specialized in the wool industry. These days wool is not exactly what one would call a hot commodity but its importance in the middle ages cannot be stressed enough. In those days death and disease was rampant and much of this was due to the fact that thatched huts were the norm as far as shelter was considered. In other words, comfort and warmth was a luxury that wasn't available to most of the populace. When wool was finally able to be shorn and sold at low prices it became one of the most sought after materials in the world because it could provide insulation that was heretofore impossible to ensure. A visitor to Peebles today can still see one of the oldest and longest continually operated wool mills and it is thankfully been maintained throughout the years to give people an idea of how Scotland's commerce worked back in those fateful days.

These days Peebles is more of a commuter town because of its proximity to the enormous city of Edinburgh. It still has a heavy tourist industry, though, and this is due to the fact that there was also a time in the town's history when it was a "health" town. This would have been during the mid-1800s and during this time health and vitality was highly desired by the rich aristocracy of the United Kingdom. Rich people who wanted to live a longer and better life flocked to towns that had natural springs because some doctors of the day surmised that hot springs had healing powers. Not long after that it was also assumed by doctors that ocean water was therapeutic and the wealthy city-dwellers began to run to coastal resort towns as well. While much of these health benefits were fictional, the fact remains that cities like Bath and Blackpool wouldn't exist if it weren't for these bogus claims. Peebles was one of the many health towns at the time because of its hydropathic establishments. It was in these buildings that water therapy was underwent by these rich dupes. The Peebles Hydro Hotel still stands to this day and it is visited no longer for its specious health claims but for its historical significance: It is one of the only hotels of its kind still in existence in the world. Peebles has always been an important part of Scotland and the Scottish Borders and it is truly refreshing to see that it still carries quite a bit of weight in the country. One can only hope that it will always remain fresh and relevant in future years.
