Scarborough in North Yorkshire is an up and coming city which has been named the most enterprising city of 2008. With a population of only 50.000 it is still the largest coastal resort in Yorkshire. The most striking feature of the town's geography is a high rocky promontory pointing eastward into the North Sea. The promontory supports the 11th Century ruins of Scarborough Castle and separates the sea front into a North Bay and a South Bay. The old town centre was located right on the shores of the North Sea, but in recent decades it has migrated inland, about 500 meters away from the shores. The old town centre is still the main focus for tourists with arcades and restaurants and tourist shops galore. The new town centre is the main hub for transport and for residential shopping. Peasholm Park in the North Bay has recently been restored to its former glory in Japanese style including a restored Pagoda. From the North Bay you can take the miniature railway to the Sea Life Centre. The North Bay is linked with the south Bay via the promenade which of course is littered with gift stands and stand-up performers.

The city centre of Scarborough has all the main shopping outlets as well as designer stores. When you are looking to find places to see you will still be able to see quite a few nice buildings and places of interest in Scarborough. Some of the most interesting buildings are pretty new. Like the Brunswick Shopping Centre which is a marvel of modern architecture. The same can be said for the Stephen Joseph theatre. Old buildings that are worth a visit are the railway station and the Grand Hotel in the heart of Scarborough. A monument that is of everyone's interest is "The Belle" located next to the lighthouse.
