Other accommodation near Southwold

Though its population is under two thousand, Southwold is by no means what you would call a "small" town. Located in the county of Suffolk, it is easy to assume that Southwold carries little importance in the grand scheme of things but this would be a dreadfully wrong assessment. Southwold is big in every way except size and, though its quaint and gorgeous appearance may suggest a lilting, easygoing pace, the fact of the matter is that the population of Southwold swells to epic proportions during tourist season. With the countless exciting diversions to be found in the town, ranging from historical to visceral and everything in between, this shouldn't be surprising in the least.

Southwold has been an important fishing port town for centuries and as far back as the 1400s the town was considered an indispensable part of that particular economy. Southwold is located on the bountiful North Sea and, as such, it offers not only plenty of business beneath the gorgeous water but also a stunning amount of scenic wonder both at sunrise and sunset. Many harbor towns that have fishing in their past unfortunately are bereft of truly beautiful sights but Southwold manages to be appealing not only for commerce but for pleasure as well. Southwold Beach is a very popular destination for those looking for fun in the sun and there are also plenty of water sports that occur in the town both for pleasure and for competition. Southwold Pier is another popular place to visit and, at over one hundred years old, it is also a great place of interest for history buffs.

By all accounts it can be reasonable surmised that history buffs may in fact have more fun in Southwold than anybody else. Aside from the aforementioned Pier, Southwold is also home to the Adnams Sole Bay brewery. This building dates back to the 1800s and is a fascinating study for those interested in the businesses that built this country during the Industrial Revolution. Southwold Lighthouse also dates back to those days and it is yet another exciting landmark to visit and take pictures in front of. The oldest and most revered building in Southwold, however, is St. Edmund's Church. This towering house of worship dates all the way back to the 1200s! Even sunbathers make a point to visit this lovely building when on holiday in Southwold and for good reason: Few churches in England are as beautiful as this majestic icon. Unfortunately, the church was damaged in the 1600s when a massive fire swept through Southwold and destroyed most of the oldest and most historic buildings in town. All the same, the damage may in fact add even more charm to the building and it is truly a blessing that it is still visible to this day. Southwold may not be the only town on the North Sea, but there is good reason to argue that it may be among the most beautiful. If you are planning a holiday somewhere on the coast of this glorious sea, it is highly recommended that you consider this lovely and inviting port town.
