York Hotels and Guest Houses

York is one of the oldest cities in the UK. It was used by no less than 3 roman emperors as their base to rule their empire. York started out to be called Eboracum, probably named after the tribes that lived there. When the Vikings took over much later the name changed to Jorvik and since the 13th Century it has been known as York. York is conveniently situated in the north east of England right in the middle between London and Edinburgh. This is one of the reasons that York is well known for all the train companies that have had their headquarters there.

When you go to York you will not be able to miss out on the city walls. They can be walked for nearly 5km and are a must see. Going into the city centre you might want to check out a very old street called the "shambles". It is a street lined with shops and tea rooms and provides you with a taste of medieval times. There are plenty of museums to visit and the Jorvik Viking museum should definitely be on your list. The Theatre Royal could well provide you with some of the entertainment that you want in the evening or otherwise you can go and dine in one of the many nice and rustic restaurants located in the city centre.

For sports enthusiasts there is the York racecourse which hosts not only some decent races, but also the York Ebor meeting and in 2005 it was the host of the re scheduled "Royal Ascot" meeting. If you want to see a stadium then York will assist you by offering you KitKat Crescent, which is indeed named after one of the biggest employers in the region, Nestle. Since 2005 York City FC has been on the receiving end of some jokes because of the name, but it has not stopped them performing pretty well.
